Wasp

Wasp

Wasp

At the beginning of the short film, there is a close up on Dave’s lips when he was talking about bringing back memories. This close up of his lips can canote what kind of memory that they could. It could suggest something like a past relationship or a sexual encounter they had together. This is effecting in creating a sense of mystery to the scene as it gets the audience to think about what these memories were. The close up of his lips then moves up to his eyes. The expression in his eyes looks hopeful. This could enlighten the audience into Dave’s intentions. This is effective because, similar to the close up of the lips, it can suggest what these memories.

Throughout Dave and Zoe’s first encounter. Dave’s face is covered in light. This can connote what kind of person he is and that he will not be a bad character in the rest of the film. This lighting is effective in showing the audience what person Dave is and showing what characters in the film are good and bad.

After Dave and Zoe’s encounter, there is a closeup of a flower which is out of focus. Zoe has children and this could represent the children in the film and what their life is like in the film. The flower could represent their innocence and fragility. The fact that the flower is out of focus can be a sign that the children’s life is different to an average child's. The conditions that they live in can be represented by the out of focus flower. Like the flower, their lives are not clear and they don’t know what will happen each day because of the money issues, that are shown in the film.

Matching with the title, there is a close up of a wasp on the window. The wasp could potentially represent Zoe’s life. The wasp appears trapped and lost. From what we have seen so far, Zoe’s life appears to be hard. She struggles with food, money, children and her neighbours. She is trapped in her council estate. Just like the wasp, she doesn’t know what she is doing or how to get out of her situation.

In the scene when Zoe is at home with her children, the only sound that the audience can hear is outside noises such as cars and noises coming from a toy one of her children have. The notes that the child plays are lower and don’t coordinate with each other. This then sets a depressing mood for the scene. Children’s toys are meant to be loud and have exciting happy notes.
The film “wasp” can be compared to many families lives in the UK. The film includes brutal realism about what life is like in poorer areas of the UK. Just like Zoe and her family, many families struggle with finding a dinner and struggling to care for their children. Zoe also represent the majority of single mothers living in poverty in the UK.
